Authentication
The process of verifying that a person, service, or device is the identity it claims to be.
Also called: sign-in
Definition
Authentication uses evidence such as passwords, security keys, one-time codes, certificates, or service credentials. It establishes identity before a system decides what that identity may access.
Why it matters
Strong authentication helps prevent account takeover across domains, hosting, analytics, email, repositories, and business systems.
Common misunderstanding
Authentication proves identity; authorization determines permissions after identity is established.
