Server
A computer or program that receives requests and provides files, data, or actions to another computer called a client.
Definition
A server is the part of a computer system that responds to requests. The word can describe physical hardware, software running on that hardware, or a managed cloud service that hides the hardware from its user. A web browser is a client; it asks a web server for a page, image, file, or response.
Why it matters
When a provider says something is “on the server,” the owner should ask which account controls it, what is stored there, who can access it, how it is backed up, and how it can be moved.
Common misunderstanding
A server is not automatically a single box in one room. Modern services often distribute work across many machines and locations.
