TLS
The security protocol used by HTTPS to protect data while it travels between a client and server.
Also called: SSL
Definition
Transport Layer Security helps a browser verify the service it reached and encrypts information while it travels across the network. Certificates connect domain names to cryptographic identities. Modern providers often automate certificate issuance and renewal.
Why it matters
HTTPS is a baseline for safe transport, forms, browser trust, and modern web behavior.
Common misunderstanding
The browser lock does not prove that the business, page claims, stored data, or application code are trustworthy; it protects the connection in transit.
