Accessibility
The practice of making websites perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust for people with varied abilities and technologies.
Also called: web accessibility
Definition
Web accessibility includes semantic structure, keyboard operation, readable contrast, useful alternatives, clear labels, predictable behavior, and compatibility with assistive technologies. It is a continuing quality practice rather than a one-time overlay.
Why it matters
Accessible experiences reach more people, reduce avoidable friction, and usually improve the underlying quality of the interface for everyone.
Common misunderstanding
Accessibility is not limited to screen readers and cannot be guaranteed by installing a single widget.
