AI agent
A software system that uses an AI model to interpret context, choose steps, and act through bounded tools or workflows.
Also called: agent system, agent systems
Definition
An AI agent combines a model with instructions, context, available tools, state, limits, and an execution loop. Its reliability depends on permissions, validation, observability, and human approval around consequential actions.
Why it matters
Agent systems can reduce repetitive coordination work but need tighter operational controls than a text-only assistant when they can change external systems.
Common misunderstanding
Calling software an agent does not make it autonomous, accurate, safe, or authorized to act without supervision.
