Canonical URL
The preferred URL identified for a page when the same or closely related content can be reached through multiple URLs.
Also called: canonical
Definition
A canonical reference helps search systems understand which URL the site considers primary among duplicates or near-duplicates. Canonicalization also depends on redirects, internal links, sitemaps, status codes, and consistent production URLs.
Why it matters
Migrations and platform parameters can create multiple addresses for similar content, fragmenting signals and complicating reporting.
Common misunderstanding
A canonical tag is a signal, not an access control or unconditional command, and it does not repair unrelated or low-quality duplicate pages by itself.
