Data normalization

Transforming data from different sources into consistent names, types, units, and structures.

Also called: normalize data, normalized data

Definition

Data normalization maps source-specific fields and formats into a defined shared structure. The mapping should preserve source lineage, document assumptions, and avoid hiding differences that matter to interpretation.

Why it matters

Consistent structures make records easier to compare, combine, validate, and report without silently treating unlike measurements as equivalent.

Common misunderstanding

Normalization does not improve inaccurate source data or make different business definitions comparable by itself.
