Website backup
A recoverable copy of website source, content, data, configuration, and other state needed to restore service.
Also called: backup, backups
Definition
A useful website backup covers the parts that cannot simply be regenerated, is stored separately from the live system, and has a documented restoration path. Source history, databases, uploads, configuration, and provider exports may require different backup methods.
Why it matters
A backup reduces the cost of accidental deletion, failed releases, compromise, vendor failure, and account loss only when restoration has been tested.
Common misunderstanding
A provider saying it performs backups is not the same as the business having an independent, verified recovery copy.
