Consent management

The process and controls used to request, record, honor, and update a person's choices about data use.

Also called: consent

Definition

Consent management connects the visitor interface to the actual behavior of analytics, advertising, embeds, communications, and stored consent records. Choices should be understandable and technically enforced where consent is the basis used.

Why it matters

A banner that does not control the underlying technologies creates false confidence and poor evidence of visitor choice.

Common misunderstanding

Consent is not the only possible basis for every data activity, and showing a banner does not by itself make data practices compliant.
