Personal data

Information that identifies, relates to, or can reasonably be connected with a person, depending on context and jurisdiction.

Also called: personal information, PII

Definition

Personal data can include direct identifiers and information that becomes identifying when combined with other records. Contact forms, analytics, account systems, logs, and marketing tools may all process it.

Why it matters

Knowing where personal data enters, travels, and remains is necessary for appropriate access, disclosure, security, retention, and deletion practices.

Common misunderstanding

Removing a person's name does not always make a record anonymous or eliminate privacy risk.
