Website architecture
The organized relationship among a website's pages, URLs, navigation, internal links, templates, and content types.
Also called: architecture, site architecture, website structure, site structure
Definition
Website architecture describes how information and functionality are grouped and connected across a site. It includes page hierarchy, URL design, navigation, internal linking, reusable templates, and the paths people and crawlers use to reach important content.
Why it matters
Clear architecture helps visitors find answers, gives search systems crawlable paths, and makes future content and maintenance less chaotic.
Common misunderstanding
Architecture is not only a sitemap diagram or menu; pages can appear in navigation while still being poorly connected, duplicated, or difficult to maintain.
Ownership implications
The business should receive a readable inventory of important routes, templates, redirects, and content relationships.
Business implications
A logical structure reduces rework and makes service, location, resource, and conversion paths easier to improve.
